To begin, read through the pattern carefully. Once you know what you need to do, assemble your supplies. Make sure you have enough yarn to complete your project, and make certain the color dye lots are all the same.
Even though the labels say “no dye lots”, too often a comparison of two different skeins of the same color will show a difference in shades. The yarn used in this baby blanket comes in five ounce skeins, so you will only need three.
To begin, chain and keep your count. Stitch markers are heaven sent for counting. Mark every twentieth stitch with a contrasting piece of yarn. You can use anything for a stitch marker.
Follow the pattern closely. You may want to print it off to keep it handy, rather than running back and forth to the computer every row. By the fourth repeat, you should have it committed to memory. A little clip, such as a hair clip or bobby pin or large paper clip is a useful aid to slide down the page to keep your place as you work.
Keep your stitches even, do not be afraid to pull out a row if you make a mistake. Unlike knitting, crocheting is a very forgiving craft, and mistakes are easily rectified.
Above all, have fun. Think about when that little baby is grown up, and you can pull out that tiny blanket and hand it over to that child's firstborn.
